Esta elección constituye un hito histórico Miguelina Espinal Howell es la primera mujer de origen dominicano en llegar al episcopado en una diócesis de la Iglesia Episcopal en los Estados Unidos.

Su elección honra la larga trayectoria de liderazgo de las comunidades caribeñas y latinoamericanas en la vida de la Iglesia y proyecta un mensaje esperanzador para la diáspora dominicana y para todas las personas migrantes.

Reconocemos en ella no sólo sus destacadas dotes personales —un profundo compromiso de fe, un liderazgo pastoral cercano, inclusivo y valiente, una sólida formación teológica y experiencia intercultural, y una capacidad probada de escucha, diálogo y construcción de puentes—sino también una vida entera consagrada a servir a Dios y al prójimo desde las periferias geográficas y existenciales.

Su trayectoria, desde sus raíces en República Dominicana hasta convertirse primero en la primera latina deán de catedral en la Iglesia Episcopal y en la Comunión Anglicana en Hartford, y ahora en obispa de una diócesis con cerca de 11 mil miembros y más de 50 comunidades de fe en Western Massachusetts, testimonia de manera elocuente los frutos del trabajo, la fe y la resiliencia de las personas migrantes.

Esta victoria llega, además, en una coyuntura migratoria preocupante en los Estados Unidos, marcada por discursos de odio, criminalización de la movilidad humana y políticas que hieren la dignidad de las personas migrantes y refugiadas. La elección de una mujer, latina y dominicana, como obispa diocesana es una respuesta profética a ese clima: recuerda a la sociedad que los inmigrantes no son una amenaza, sino una bendición; no son un problema que gestionar, sino protagonistas de comunidades más justas, diversas y solidarias.

Para la comunidad dominicana —dentro y fuera de la Isla— la elección de la obispa Miguelina Espinal Howell es motivo de orgullo y de examen de conciencia: nos invita a reconocer el talento y la vocación de nuestras mujeres, a celebrar la riqueza de nuestra fe encarnada en el servicio y a redoblar esfuerzos para que, también en nuestra región del Caribe, las iglesias y las instituciones reflejen esa misma inclusión y apertura al liderazgo femenino.

Oramos para que el Espíritu Santo siga guiando a la obispa electa Miguelina en esta nueva etapa, fortaleciendo su ministerio al servicio del Pueblo de Dios en Western Massachusetts. Que su episcopado sea un signo de reconciliación, justicia y hospitalidad, y que su testimonio inspire a las iglesias, a los gobiernos y a la opinión pública a ver en cada persona migrante el rostro de Cristo.

Zile Foundation expresses its deep joy and heartfelt congratulations on the election of the Rev. Miguelina Espinal Howell as the new bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts.
This election is a historic milestone. Miguelina Espinal Howell is the first woman of Dominican origin to become a bishop in a diocesan see of The Episcopal Church in the United States, and the first person of Dominican heritage to serve as bishop of Western Massachusetts. Her election honors the long journey of Caribbean and Latin American communities within the life of the Church and sends a hopeful message to the Dominican diaspora and to all migrant communities.
In her we recognize not only outstanding personal gifts—a deep and authentic commitment of faith, a growing, courageous and inclusive leadership, solid theological formation and intercultural experience, and a proven capacity for listening, dialogue, and bridge-building—but also a life dedicated to serving God and neighbor, especially among those who live on the social and geographic margins.
Her path, from her roots in the Dominican Republic to becoming the first Latina dean of a cathedral in The Episcopal Church in Hartford, and now bishop of a diocese with around 50 congregations and nearly 11,000 members in Western Massachusetts, clearly shows the fruits of the work, faith, and resilience of migrants and their families. At the same time, within a Church that today numbers about 1.55 million active baptized members in more than 6,700 congregations, her election is a sign of the growing visibility and recognition of immigrant communities.
This victory also takes place in a worrying migratory context in the United States, marked by hate speech, criminalization of human mobility, and policies that wound the dignity of migrants and refugees. The election of a woman, a Latina, and a Dominican as diocesan bishop is a prophetic response to that climate: it reminds society that migrants are not a threat, but a blessing; not a problem to be managed, but protagonists of more just, diverse, and supportive communities.
For the Dominican community—inside and outside the island—the election of Bishop-elect Miguelina Espinal Howell is both a source of pride and a call to self-reflection. It invites us to recognize the talent and vocation of our women, to celebrate the richness of our faith expressed in service, and to renew our efforts so that, also in our Caribbean region, churches and institutions may reflect this same inclusion and openness to women’s leadership.
We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide Bishop-elect Miguelina in this new stage, strengthening her ministry at the service of God’s people in Western Massachusetts. May her episcopate be a sign of reconciliation, justice, and hospitality, and may her witness inspire churches, governments, and public opinion to see in every migrant the face of Christ and a bearer of dignity.
