Port-au-Prince, 15 September 2015 – On this International Day of Democracy, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the members of the international community in Haiti represented in the "Core Group" (the Ambassadors of Brazil, Canada, the European Union, France, Spain, the United States of America and the Special Representative of the Organization of American States) reiterate their strong commitment to supporting the democratic renewal of political institutions in Haiti through a transparent, inclusive and fair electoral process.

Underscoring the critical nature of the 2015 elections for the re-establishment of  institutional balance and the appointment  of  elected and accountable representatives at all levels, the  members of the “Core Group” urge all actors to spare no effort to ensure the completion of the 2015 electoral cycle which will allow for the installation of a new Parliament on 11 January and a new President on 7 February 2016, in keeping with the Constitution, in addition to representatives at the local level.  In this context, they trust that the CEP will continue its work towards improving the electoral process including by the adoption of corrective measures based on the experience of the first round and as proposed by the election observation missions. They encourage the CEP to undertake continuous, transparent, consultative and inclusive engagement with political parties, candidates and the electorate.

The members of the Core Group call on all actors - the CEP, the Government, political parties and candidates as well as the electorate, to use the opportunity provided by these elections to build, together, a more peaceful, stable and prosperous Haiti in which the rule of law prevails and democracy flourishes.
